There is a strange little movement growing among “Christian” blogs to turn off comments. Although I understand the mindset, and motivation, this trend really bothers me and I’m going to tell you why. The first time I went to visit A Holy Experience, the blog of Ann Voskamp, author of 1000 Gifts, I was bothered by the fact that there was no comment box. It felt to me like a “talk to the hand.” She wanted to share her voice, her point of view, her testimony, but she had no interest in hearing mine. She was, by closing comments, drawing a line which effectively cut her readers off from her. I have met Ann. I know that she is an extremely shy, humble woman who is truly seeking God and His will for her life. And I have no doubt that the thousands of comments that she would receive daily would be overwhelming to her and that for the sake of her sanity and priorities it was necessary for her to either turn [...]

The Way I See … Asking for Help

Is asking for help hard for you? It is for me. Admitting I need help isn’t so bad … I am nowhere near omnipotent so the fact that I need help, on a pretty continual basis, is downright obvious! But my inclination is to think that you should notice my need and leap to my rescue! I don’t want to have to humble myself enough to ask for either a hand up … or a hand out! This weekend when I discovered that I could not afford to ship a promised care package to J and C (in Asia) I was devastated. I have been through a lot recently and that was just … almost … one blow more than I could take! Here I was, trying to do something good, for someone else, and I was being stopped. It wasn’t fair.
